On to the coast

Today is the last day of the first leg of our trip. We head to Seaside and Cannon Beach later this morning. The weather has been a little cloudy and chilly since we arrived but it's beautiful today. Let's hope it's the same where we're going. Portland has changed a lot since I lived here. The Pearl District is completely built up and there are a few more light rail lines which makes travelling around more convenient though, we've really walked more than anything. I'll have pictures and links to great places we went to when we return. Have a great day!

Leavin' on a jet plane

Tomorrow we leave for Portland, OR and Seattle, WA. I am so excited. I lived there for a few years and co-managed the NW Portland Intl Hostel. That's the hostel on the left. It's now a group lodging center but it's right next door to the building that is now the hostel. We'll also be visiting the Seaside hostel which used to be owned by the same person (Jim Kennett, a great guy), and taking a day trip to Cannon Beach. Then it's on to Seattle and then back to Portland. I can't wait to revisit all of my old haunts. Typhoon! for Miang Kum which I've never seen anywhere else, Nob Hill and the Pearl District. Portland is the best place for buying vintage stuff, I love the stuff.

I don't know how much access I'll have to computers over our vacation (the less contact the better probably) so this may be the last entry for a while. Enjoy the long weekend!

Another Overheard in New York

I just can't resist

Kid #1: Paper beats rock. BAM! Your rock is blowed up!
Kid #2: "Bam" doesn't blow up, "bam" makes it spicy. Now I got a SPICY ROCK! You can't defeat that!

Lady: Wow, that really sucks...
Man: Yeah, you never know how useful all your fingers are until you lose one. And you know what's so crazy? I used to fantasize about cutting one of my fingers off before this happened.
Lady: Are you serious? Which one?
Man: I couldn't decide...

Lost season finale

Maybe the theories about space-time are right. I mean, the whole show goes back and forth from the present to the past and the future. Was the looking glass station flooding that Ben spoke of, the actual one that Charlie died in? Was Charlie the musician who programmed the switch?

I like how Ben was trying to convince Jack not to make the phone call...stop dripping blood all over yourself Ben and tell us WHY?! Why can't we leave the island? I mean, the survivors, why can't the survivors leave the island...I'm not trapped. Locke too, why Locke why?! If you were Ben or Locke and you wanted to make a convincing argument, wouldn't saying why basically be at the top of your list?

OK, to the future. On Lost Screencaps and Easter Eggs (where this capshot is from), people wrote that the name of the funeral parlor "Hoffs Drawlar" is an anagram for Flash Forward. Is the body in the coffin Locke's? I see a "J" and an "o" in the newspaper clipping. And Kate...she can't be with Sawyer, she's driving a Volvo for Christ's sake!

Will next season take place off of the island with flashbacks to it? I guess we have seven months to wait and see.

I saw Gaby Basora's line on Lena Corwin's blog. I love the loose airy quality of the clothes.

Miranda July

Remember when I said she was really cool, well, she's still really cool. By way of Edward Champion's Return of the Reluctant, is Miranda July in a Blonde Redhead video, for the song "Top Ranking". I like Blonde Redhead too, which surprised me, I don't know why and, if you're interested, here's Miranda July's website.

Alicia Block

I love these "vibrant photographs" from Alicia Block. They're so pretty. She also has an Etsy shop.

Bedroom colors

We've had ranges of blue, brown and gray paint chips hanging on our bedroom walls for over a year, they actually look kind of cool, but when I saw this picture in the Domino anniversary slide show I knew this was the answer...now, to do the work. Paint from Pratt & Lambert. Did I mention I love paint chips?

Emery & Cie

By way of decor8 is Emery & Cie paints. I love the colors, perhaps next pay day I'll order some sample chips, which are hand painted! I love paint chips.

Woman survives 'internal decapitation'

Charlie in the Looking Glass

These are the series one McFarlane action figures for Lost. I should have known they existed but I just never thought about it.

This week is definitely for Charlie...sorry Charlie, but since they're all dead already anyway right? It doesn't matter. Ack, it's Rose and Bernard! They live! I mean, they're dead, I mean...They're coming right now man! Wake me up when the commercial is over (they seriously need to change this show back to the 9 pm timeslot). There are a lot of commercials...jeez. They've been talking about going to the radio tower for 45 minutes. Just go already. I thought it was mean of Charlie to tell Hurley that he wouldn't have fit in that boat but you know what? Looking at that boat, I think Charlie was right. I don't think I would fit in that boat. I knew it, Desmond's going to go, I KNEW IT! I didn't say it, but I knew it...no no, Charlie, bye bye Charlie (brave lad). Who the hell are those submarine women? I guess we have to wait until next week. That episode was stinky!

OMG Melinda!

Total shock! Melinda is off Idol...time for Lost.

Vandalized Vintage

I love these plates by Trixie Delicious (blog) at Vandalized Vintage (Etsy Shop). I always see vintage plates I like but never buy them because well...one can only eat off of so many plates, but these are genius.

Michael's Garden

Michael is an AMAZING photographer. Check out the photos he took this weekend of our garden. You can see more of his work on his website.

I don't get this

I read about this cat paw thing on Snarky Malarky. I love Snarky Malarky. I think I've said that before. Anyways...what's with the cat paw thing? It's funny, that's the truth but what does it mean?! Do I not get it because I'm not Japanese? There's more about the cat paw at Akihabara News and of course on the company website Bandai. Attack cat paw! Get one before they're all gone!

While She Naps

Former 6th grade teacher and now soft toy maker, Abby Jane makes the most unbelievable stuffed bird sculptures (yes, they are sculptures, works of art really). She does it while her children nap (when most parents would be catching their breath). Visit her site While She Naps and/or her flickr page

Kerry Cassill

I love these quilts and duvet covers from Kerry Cassill. I found these by way of Decor8. I have an old quilt from April Cornell that I'm doing some mad patching on because it's totally falling apart. I need to replace it one day, these would be a good option. The Kerry Cassill clothes look like they'd be really great for the summer too. I love the patterns.

Mmmm cookies

My sister came to visit this weekend with my 13 month old nephew (so cute). We had a great time. Michael & I are still recovering (I don't know how she does it). Jack takes long afternoon naps (shouldn't we all) and we decided to take the opportunity to bake some cookies. We made these Martha Stewart Vanilla Chocolate Wafers. They were really good, and easy to make though the recipe calls for rolling two separate logs of dough, freezing them both and then rolling them together. The rolling them together part didn't work as easily as the rest but that's ok. Our cookies looked JUST like these. Well, close anyway.

I'm an evil villan just like Ben

Ben and I have the same birthday! Who would have known?! I knew there was something special about me, I was just waiting for the island to tell me what it was. Actually, I'm still kind of waiting. Namaste man! Goodbye Ben, Hello Locke, there's a new sherrif in town. Well, what can you expect for a guy who grew up with an alchoholic father who blames his son for the death of his wife? And you know who the natives are? They're dead people. I swear it. Hostiles=Dead People=Others (see sexy latino who hasn't aged). You know what? It's ok to talk about ghosts and stuff but I don't want them on this show, ok? I'm not going to be watching some ghost story haunted island Lost show. Screw you Jacob! This ain't no Ghost Whisperer. And by the way, Locke's not dead. Eye patch guy, he's not dead, and though it may have looked like the light went out of Locke's eyes, he wasn't dead when Ben walked away...but, I guess, if he's on the island...

That's a dog

This Comcast commercial makes me smile...and that's not Zach Galifianakis, who, incidentally is funnier than the commercial.

Coupon From Mom

I got the handmade coupon you see above from my mother. How did she arrange to have the person of my choice agree to clean my house? A bigger question, who is the person of my choice? My first thought was that I would like George Bush to clean the apartment but then I thought, though entertaining, he probably wouldn't be too good at it. Who would be entertaining and be good at cleaning the house? I was thinking, Bette Midler! But she's got a new show in Vegas, Paris Hilton would be entertaining but she's going to jail and I'm guessing she's probably a bitch. This is something I need to figure out and, I must speak to my mother about how she got so connected.

Regarding the expiration date, does this coupon falls under the Gift Certificate Law in Massachusetts (where I received it) or New York (where it was created) or in the location of the residence of the person of my choice?

Revolutionary tray?!

OK, Lean Cuisine has a new product, the microwavable panini. It comes with a "revolutionary" grilling tray (that's got to be worth more than the panini right?). How do these things work. I haven't actually had the panini but let's assume it actually comes out of the microwave crispy...it's a mystery to me. I found the company that may have the answers, Paper Coaters. They have what they call the "C-Tray", could this be the revolutionary tray?! "Using the latest polymer film and paperboard technology, the C-Tray has all the attributes of the popular Thermo-Fresh range, but is specifically designed to make microwave frozen foods crispy." Paperboard technology? Curiouser and curiouser.

Thai Cooking Made Easy - with Liz (and 24)

Tonight's dinner was Thai soup and salad, made by Liz. Yum. 24 was ok. Daniel Jackson was on again?! Yes, I'm a dork. In any case, Audrey was nowhere to be seen, which is fine because she's basically comatose anyway. The Chinese infiltrated CTU, through the sewers. It didn't seem very difficult, which makes one wonder. Jack's son, uh, I mean nephew is wanted by the Chinese but really by his grandfather who wanted to kill him about 5 episodes ago so it really doesn't make any sense. Miles, uh I mean Milo, uh I mean Miles (they had to have done that on purpose), got shot protecting Nadia which frees her up for Silver Spoons. In the end though, nothing really happened.

Tis the season

Garbage gets good again.
